I'm new here... do you guys mind me cross-posting? I wrote "Ley Lines" ages ago, but I figured it was time to dust it off and start posting it as a serial. If you'd rather I not link the new episodes, just let me know!

What would you guys say are essential supplements for Requiem or the general WoD? I'm looking to expand my collection, but I'm not sure where to begin. I also am interested in picking up Changeling, as I've seen nothing but good reviews for it thus far.

Note: I'm not really interested in having an exhaustive collection, but just the ones that would particularly add to a chronicle.

2:40 pm - Question and rant

ashmodai
So, I finally started reading up on Vampire: The Requiem. Being a fan of Masquerade for so long, I worried that it'd be difficult to make the transition, but I found this wasn't the case at all. I really like some of the changes and ideas present in Requiem, although the setting seems bland in comparison to Masquerade - and I question the logic of having so many bloodlines. But, overall, I like what I've been reading.

Then I got started on supplements - namely, the Ordo Dracul book and the Ghouls book. I have a problem with the Ordo Dracul book, and I could use some opinions. The "new coils" chapter is really vague about some of the coils - the descriptions are really short compared to what we get in the corebook. This in particular bothered me (c&ped form white wolf wikia)

Second Tier: A Taste of Life
Through the power of their Vitae, the Kindred may invoke the blush of health and the ability to eat food..

Inside the actual book, the description isn't much better - it only includes to say that as long as food is present in the vampire's stomach, the vampire doesn't suffer roll penalties when making a hunger related frenzy check. What I'm wondering is, if this is basically the same as the Eat Food merit in VTM (I don't remember seeing a similar merit in Requiem, but I could be wrong). In other words, if after this Coil tier in particular is 'deactivated', the vampire has to vomit up the food. But then it seems like a loss of blood points should be applicable too, if the vampire has any vitae in his/her stomach. But then what happens if the Coil is 'refreshed' up until the point the vampire has to sleep for the day? This vagueness is driving me nuts. Lol.

And lastly.. the ghoul book. Ghouls: Fatal Addiction was one of my favorite supplements in VTM, and it really painted the tragic life of ghouls in a fascinating way. The unique derangements for ghouls were fascinating, and written by a Malkavian doctor. The different types of ghouls present were interesting - the Fatal Addiction book really went into detail about ghouls who had gone rogue, and the benefits and problems that come with that life. The bodyguard, the pretty ornament, and the revenant families were all really fleshed out and interesting archetypes - and the stereotypes of how the different clans treat their ghouls was written in a light that let readers/roleplayers know just how crappy ghoul life is under any vampire, while giving plenty of inspiration for their own vampire/ghoul relationships. Then, the NWoD Ghouls book.. Derangements get one page, and none of them are really that unique and interesting compared to the Fatal Addiction book. Renfield Syndrome, for example, and the one which I can't remember the name.. but involved how female ghouls on their menses can sometimes react in extremes to the loss of blood over that time.. all are far more creative than what the Ghouls book offers. I.e. "Fetishism". Now, I'm not saying that has no place, but with the kind of life ghouls lead and the effects of vitae on their bodies, there should be really a lot more.. and that section truly paled in comparison to the Fatal Addiction book. Rogue ghouls are mentioned in a couple paragraphs here or there in Ghouls, but the book doesn't really give you many ideas on the possibilities of what to do with them, unlike Fatal Addiction, which offers a short story, a a sample profile, a weakness present in mechanics, and other things. And again, the Fatal Addiction books paints the life of ghouls in a more fascinating light, while Ghouls basically just throws things out there in a lackluster fashion and describes how one vampire master might wrap up her ghoul's genitals in twine, tight it to a door, and slam it. Blah.

tl;dr the Ghouls book doesn't tell us ANYTHING we couldn't figure out on our own, and in fact tells us considerably less than the Fatal Addiction book. It does have a few plusses, i.e. the introduction of Mandragora and ghoul families/mechanics for creating ghoul bloodlines. But other than that, it is really an inferior product compared to Fatal Addiction.

This is not to say that I was expecting Ghouls to be a carbon copy of Fatal Addiction - with the new Clan and Covenant relations, there is a wealth of information that could be present. And this is not to say that info in Fatal Addiction can't be ported over to Requiem.. but I was just expecting more than what was given.

The purpose of that rant is, I want to ask: Have any of you read a supplement/corebook for nWoD that you find pales in comparison to its oWoD counterpart? I'm interesting in hearing some rants. :)

3:20 pm - LARPer's thanks to a museum

werekat
This is a post of public thanks to the museum that hosted our LARP Tremere chantry for over two years until its leadership changed. None of the players in our game were particularly good photographers at the time. However, I found a professional photographers' account of a visit to this museum. The text at the link is in Cyrillic; however, the photos speak for themselves.

So, without much ado, I present to you the chantry of Kyiv - the Apothecary museum (lots of traffic):

Hey all

I'm not sure if this is the place for it or not (I'll leave that up to the mods to decide), but I'm running "Santa Monica Vampires - a Vampire the Requiem Game" currently. I'll be posting Actual-Play reports every fortnight or so, detailing each adventure our cadre of fledgeling Kindred get up to. You can read along, and if you enjoy the various shenanigans, you can leave comments. If you want to run a game similar to this one, I can also give advice and suggestions.

If you're at all interested, you can read this blog over at http://marstenvampire.blogspot.com/

But I'm not just here to pitch my own blog, hell no. I'd like to maybe get a discussion going in the comments section here about your reports for your games. Do you write AP Reports? If so, why not throw in a link? Maybe we can get a compilation of them posted somewhere.

3:32 am - Old World of Darkness

dolcissimo
I've begun to collect Old WoD books - slowly but surely, I'm building my numbers...

However, I haven't been able to find a completed list of all of the books published.

My question/s is/are -

Does anyone know where to find one?

and/or -

If anyone has a complete list {not necessarily a complete COLLECTION... simply a complete list}, preferably sorted by Game Category {Changeling in one list, Vampire in another, etc.} of the books published in the Old World of Darkness series, could you please guide me to it and/or send it to me?

LJ message works, or you could email me at ceiliur.ean@gmail.com

Thanks VERY much!~

8:33 am - "So, how did you become a vampire?"

thegamemistress
I've run a number of WoD games, and noticed that some players seem to ignore their character's life prior to the start of the game. Not detailing the character's childhood, family and the like, I could live with (it's not ideal, but I could live with it), but these players also completely ignore the circumstances of the character's Embrace/First Change/Chrysalis/whatever. It's as if the character simply came into existence as a vampire/werewolf/mage/what have you.

Trying to run Preludes with these sorts of players in order to flesh out the character can be an exercise in frustration, because they don't give a GM anything to work with. And coming up with something whole cloth on the spur of the moment (often with other players waiting to start the game) isn't easy.

Advice? "Find better players" isn't always a viable solution around here if you want more than say, two players. :)
